Attorneys for Luigi Mangione, who’s accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Dec. 4, filed Friday to forestall federal prosecutors from looking for the loss of life penalty.

Mr. Mangione’s group contends that the Justice Department and Legal professional Normal Pam Bondi need the loss of life penalty as a social media stunt.

Ms. Bondi introduced on April 1 that she directed the U.S. Legal professional’s Workplace for the Southern District of New York to hunt loss of life for Mr. Mangione.

The press launch she issued was “political, arbitrary, capricious, a breach of established loss of life penalty protocol,” Mr. Mangione’s group stated, including that “her follow-up Instagram put up stating plainly Mangione is responsible of homicide … has prejudiced the grand jury course of on this District.”

Mr. Mangione is dealing with 11 federal expenses that embrace first-degree homicide in furtherance of terrorism, homicide by using a firearm, a separate firearms offense and two counts of stalking.

His attorneys argued that, along with being motivated by publicity, Ms. Bondi’s division can’t be assumed to be working in good religion as a result of dismissal of a case in opposition to New York Mayor Eric Adams and the deportation of Salvadoran citizen Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

“The Legal professional Normal is being according to the brand new tradition of the best ranges of the Justice Department, one which values private will over course of, publicity over discretion and partisan politics over justice,” they wrote.
